Assist Us to Live: Reforms Disabled People Need

MPs have voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill in its Second Reading – a victory for disabled people, terminally ill people, and everyone this Bill would have put at risk.

As disabled people, we fight every day to get basic care – from support eating to washing, to leaving our homes and going to work. Palliative and social care systems are dangerously underfunded, and government must fix these issues before it considers legalising assisted suicide.

We thank MPs for assisting us to live. We’re ready to work with government to deliver the reforms disabled people have been demanding – fully funded palliative care, an end to the social care savings threshold, pay equality for personal care workers, and a taskforce on interdependent living led by disabled people ourselves.

Assist Us To Live is a disability rights group founded by four leading voices in the UK disability rights movement: Jamie Hale, founder of CRIPtic Arts; Kyla Harris, actor; Anna Landre, researcher; Rensa Gaunt, campaigner; and Lucy Webster, journalist.

Assist Us To Live believes the answer to suffering at the end of life is funded, better care – not a law that helps disabled people end their lives. The group is working to stop the immediate legalisation of assisted suicide, and to demand the care every person deserves to live well. This means fully funding palliative care, reforming social care, and ensuring disabled and terminally ill people have autonomy over how they live.
Only in a world where we all have the basics can we safely consider assisted suicide.
